STEVE SABO

WORLD OPEN 2009

MetPlas’ own, Steve Sabo has achieved more in his 5 years of competitive shooting than most have in a life time.  Steve Sabo, a Leechburg resident, is a night shift machine operator at MetPlas.  Steve has been employed with MetPlas for 19 years.  Not only does Steve’s dedication make him stand out at MetPlas, it also carries over to his extra curricular activities.

Steve finished his 2009 year rated as a “Long Range Marksman”.  To receive this prestigious title you must have a total of 30 points in competitive shoots in your shooting career.  Points are awarded the by the number of competitive wins.

In the 2009 shooting season, Steve placed 6th place in Nationals and 1st place in the Virgina-1000 Yard Club Grand Overall.  Steve doesn’t plan on stopping there; his 2010 goal is to be 1st at Nationals and Shooter of the Year.  Steve shoots both light and heavy weight guns-heavy being his specialty.  Steve’s heavy gun of choice is a Red 300 Winchester Short Magnum with a 20-42 Power Night Force scope.

When asked, “How do you prepare for a 1000 yard shoot?” Steve explained in 2009 he shot 12 lbs of powder and 1000 rounds out of both his light and heavy guns.  Steve participated in 34 matches last year.  Since shooting 1000 yards in the back yard is not an option -300 yard practices are used to measure the speed of the bullet and adjusted accordingly.  Per Steve, “bullet loading and consistency is what makes a good shot.”

MetPlas was officially recognized as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) in January of 2009.  This status will significantly contribute to the subcontracting goals of our government customers and also prime contractors to the government.  The government requires prime contractors to allocate a percentage of their subcontracting specifically to SDVOSBs.  MetPlas' President Russ Finsness served our country in the Marine Corps. during the Vietnam War.  For further information regarding using MetPlas as a SDVOSB, please contact Mike Carlin, MetPlas' Defense & Aerospace Business Development Specialist.

On October 28th, 4th District Pennsylvania Congressman Jason Altmire toured our facility as part of his effort to help regional companies increase Department of Defense business opportunities and bring new jobs to the region.  While at MetPlas, Congressman Altmire reviewed MetPlas' expansion plans with our President Russ Finsness.  This expansion will bring new jobs to the congressman's district in 2009.  Congressman Jason Altmire represents all or parts of six counties in Western Pennsylvania. He has quickly established himself as one of the leading voices in Congress on veteran, health care and small business issues.

MetPlas: A History of Growth

3

Founded in 1981 by majority shareholder Russ Finsness and 3 partners, MetPlas traces its roots back to a 10,500 square foot leased location in Glenshaw, PA.  The original business plan was based on revenue projections derived from the former Westinghouse Transportation Division and other local companies.  Within 2 years, MetPlas was operating at a profit and establishing a pattern of steady growth and a reputation built on quality.

Fast forward to September 1988 and MetPlas made the move to an ultra modern 24,600 square foot facility of its own located in Natrona Heights, PA.  At this time, MetPlas had already grown to around 20 employees.  The same period also saw the opening of a new facility in Columbia, South Carolina that was designed to serve other Westinghouse units in the southeast.  After 5 years, the decision was made to close the South Carolina plant and centralize all production in the Pittsburgh facility.

In November 1994, MetPlas made the commitment to embark on a World Class Manufacturing Program headed by the late Tom Goodrich.  Seven teams were formed including:  Quality Improvement, Set-up Reduction, Plant Equipment & Maintenance, Purchasing, Assembly/Paint/Finish, Thru-put Reduction, MIS and Plant Layout.  The results of the program were seen the following year when sales increased by 48% with only a 17% increase in direct labor while inventories declined by 56%.

MetPlas grew another 10,800 square feet in 1998 with an addition to the existing building that was required by the extreme upswing in business.  A stand alone climate controlled quality/inspection room was also added during this period to  remove factors such as heat and humidity from effecting the QC equipment.  From 1998-2000 MetPlas experienced an astounding 63% growth rate that ranked us 4th under the manufacturing category in the entire region.

Three years later, at the end of 2001, MetPlas faced another dilemma dealing with space.  This time it centered around finished goods.  A mezzanine area and shelving was then added to accommodate customer stocking programs to reflect the industry trends of J.I.T. and Kan-ban that many OEM's were turning to.  This decision was an extremely cost effective solution compared to another building expansion program.

MetPlas was recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times in 2001 as one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies in the region and then again in 2002 for the category of Largest Revenue Percentage Growth of all top companies in the Pittsburgh area.

ISO certification was achieved in 2004 after an extreme amount of hard work and diligence by MetPlas employees of all levels.  The certification has been a welcomed addition by minimizing or completely eliminating audits by our customers, especially those in medical related industries.

2008 continued the pattern of growth with the addition of over 14,000 square feet of manufacturing space to the existing building; thereby positioning MetPlas for many more years of prosperity with an ever expanding customer base.

Boeing Selects MetPlas

MetPlas recently participated at the invitation only Boeing Supplier Diversity Showcase on August 13, 2008 in Seattle Washington.  One of the showcase's stated goals was to provide Boeing with the opportunity to learn more about the technology offerings small and diverse businesses can offer and to develop relationships that can provide innovative, best of industry and best value solutions.  As part of the showcase, MetPlas got the chance to meet with Boeing Supplier Management Leaders and to learn more of Boeing's supply chain management initiatives.  It also opens up the opportunity for MetPlas to operate as a Tier I supplier directly to Boeing.  This is the second year Boeing has held this event and also the second straight year MetPlas has been invited.  According to MetPlas' President Russ Finsness, "To be one of just 125 suppliers chosen nationally was an extraordinary honor for us."

MetPlas Retains Dock-to-Stock Qualification

July saw MetPlas undergo an extensive quality audit for retention of its dock-to-stock status with a major medical OEM.  Achieving this status allows MetPlas' parts to bypass incoming inspection and go straight onto the OEM's production floor greatly reducing thru-put and providing a substantial cost savings to the OEM.  The audit consisted of reviewing MetPlas' quality system and interviewing of employees at all levels.  MetPlas received the results of the audit in August and were not issued a single corrective action.  MetPlas has maintained our dock-to-stock status for 6 consecutive years and is also a dock-to-stock supplier to several other OEM's in a variety of industries.
